About Yuimaru Kitchen

Yuimaru Kitchen is more than a restaurant—it’s a love letter to the art of Japanese cuisine and the warmth of the Johnson City community. Since opening its doors in 2019, Yuimaru has become a go-to destination for those seeking authentic Japanese flavors in a relaxed, welcoming setting. From ramen to sushi and hibachi, the menu is a delightful blend of tradition and innovation, crafted with the freshest ingredients and a touch of creative flair.

The restaurant’s story began when Richard Nguru and his business partner, Ryan Kim, shared a dream of bringing exceptional Japanese dining to Johnson City. Together, they established Yuimaru Kitchen, quickly earning the love and loyalty of the community. When Ryan returned to Atlanta, Richard took on full ownership, infusing the restaurant with his vision of a dining experience that combines bold flavors, genuine hospitality, and unforgettable memories.

About The Owner

Richard Nguru’s culinary journey is one of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. From his early days in culinary school, Richard dreamed of opening his own restaurant, a place where people could gather to enjoy incredible food and meaningful connections.

His career began at Ruby House in Keystone, South Dakota, where he honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for the culinary arts. A move to California allowed Richard to expand his expertise before settling in Atlanta, where he rose to become Head Chef and General Manager at the renowned Kiku Japanese Steak House. Kiku’s reputation for quality attracted a clientele of loyal patrons, including local celebrities, and helped Richard refine his craft and leadership.

In 2019, Richard brought his talents and vision to Johnson City, co-founding Yuimaru Kitchen with Ryan Hojung Kim. After Ryan’s departure, Richard embraced sole ownership, channeling his creativity and dedication into every aspect of the restaurant. Today, his hands-on approach and passion for Japanese cuisine are evident in every dish served at Yuimaru Kitchen.

Outside of the restaurant, Richard enjoys spending time with his family or exploring the scenic beauty of East Tennessee on his motorcycle. His commitment to family, community, and culinary continues to shape Yuimaru Kitchen into a beloved local gem.

At Yuimaru Kitchen, Richard and his team are proud to welcome every guest with open arms, ensuring each visit is a memorable experience filled with exceptional flavors and heartfelt hospitality.
